May 9, 2019 | 11:00 AM

Firefighters battled intense flames for several hours early Thursday morning after a fire broke out in the basement of a home.

Emergency crews were called to the blaze at 1891 101 St. just before 2:30 a.m. Two engines and 13 personal spent six hours on scene tackling the blaze.

Upon arrival, teams searched the main floor to ensure there was no one inside. Firefighters then made an aggressive attack on the basement fire.

Homeowner Dirk van Ee said no one was home at the time as the previous tenants had moved out. He was making renovations to the home the day prior but not in the basement.

β€œIt’s a shock,β€œ he said on seeing the damages, which are extensive in the basement, while the main floor sustained minor smoke and heat damage.

In addition to the fire, he said it is apparent someone broke into the garage as the backdoor was broken down.

Deputy Chief Lindsay Holm said the department and RCMP are investigating the incident.
