The Battlefords North Stars got back in the win column last night after defeating the La Ronge Ice Wolves 5-3 at the Mel Hegland Uniplex in La Ronge.

The game was kicked off with a late first period coming goal from Battlefords rookie Lucas Schoenborn. This was the Minot, North Dakota product’s very first goal in a North Stars jersey and it gave the North Stars a 1-0 lead.

In the second period, the North Stars came out without hesitation and got another quick goal on the board to go up 2-0, this time from Nikita Ivashchenko, assisted by Josh Knittig.

It seemed like the North Stars had the momentum but the Ice Wolves answered back with a goal from Seth Dragan to close to gap and make it 2-1.

That didn’t last long though as Jace Rask was able to find the back of the net as well to get his first in a North Stars jersey and increase the lead to 3-1.

Just when it seemed like the North Stars had control and were going to finish off the period with a two goal lead, they got a penalty, giving La Ronge a powerplay opportunity.

During the powerplay, Nathan Da Silva was able to strike the nylon to close the gap again and make it a 3-2 game going into intermission.

Coming out for the third period, the Ice Wolves definitely had the edge, playing solid defence and holding the North Stars to very little puck possession. This resulted in late goal for La Ronge, coming from Cole Thomas to tie the game 3-3 in the final four minutes.

But this only fuelled the North Stars as shortly after, Schoenborn got what would go down as the game winning goal to take back the lead and go up 4-3. Then to seal the deal, Rylan Williams got his fifth of the season to make it 5-3 and finish the game.

The North Stars outshot the Ice Wolves 38 to 26, went 0/4 on the powerplay and stopped the Ice Wolves three out of four times on the penalty kill.

Lucas Schoenborn and Jace Rask both got their first goals as Ice Wolves and Bryce Boughen not only got his first assist as North Star but also added two more to total three assists on the night.

With the win, the North Stars improve to 7-4-1 on the season and Justen Maric stopped 23/26 shots in the contest.

The North Stars take on the Ice Wolves again tonight at the Mel Hegland Uniplex in La Ronge.

Puck drop is 7:30 p.m. with pregame show starting at 7:00 p.m. on 93.3 Beach Radio.
