Trade minister says she is ‘disappointed by report of caucus revolt to oust Trudeau

OTTAWA — Trade Minister Mary Ng says she has full confidence in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as word began to spread late Friday about a growing revolt against his leadership within the Liberal caucus.

Ng is travelling back to Canada with Trudeau from Laos, where they were attending a summit of southeast Asian countries.

CBC News reported that in Trudeau’s absence, a number of MPs had meetings over the last several days pushing each other to commit to call for his resignation.

Ng responded to the story during a refuelling stop in Hawaii.

She says she is disappointed to read about the idea that some of her caucus colleagues are working to oust Trudeau.

Trudeau has maintained his hold on the Liberal party even as his government’s slide in the polls became a freefall and his Liberal party lost two strongholds in Toronto and Montreal byelections.

Previous attempts to revolt against Trudeau have failed when the efforts did not garner broader support from more than one or two MPs.

Several Liberals contacted by The Canadian Press Friday say they have not been approached to sign a pledge, and one suggested the effort was being kept away from cabinet ministers who are perceived to be solidly behind the prime minister.
