The Northwest U15 AA Sharks had a flawless start to the season after grabbing first place at the Calgary Firestarter Tournament this past weekend.

The Calgary Firestarter is an invite only and one of the biggest girls hockey tournaments across western Canada, that brought 16 teams from across the country to compete, 5 from Saskatchewan and 11 from Alberta.

On Friday, the Sharks started off hot, beating the Calgary Fire White 7-2 and the Edmonton Ice Blue 4-2.

The team’s success continued on into the next day when they faced off against the Airdrie Lighting and won 7-0.

The toughest games for the Sharks were on Sunday, where they matchup against the Calgary Fire Black and Red Deer Topco Oilsite Products. Both games were close, but the Sharks were able to grab wins in both games, beating Calgary 4-2 and Red Deer 3-1.

The Sharks finished the tournament with a 5-0 record and were the only team not to lose a game throughout the tournament, giving them first place in the standings.

“I’m just proud of the girls on the weekend…It’s kind of a tournament to kickstart the year and we are proud of the full team effort. It took everybody to be playing their best all weekend and we’re lucky to be led by a solid core of veteran players returning from last season.” Said Northwest AA Sharks Head Coach, Kim Kramer.

Kramer added that it was an all-around good performance from the team with lots of compete and effort.

“They were moving pucks well, they were breaking out of their zone, they were attacking and checking and making it difficult on the other teams. Just lots of compete and effort…we also had consistent play from both goaltenders all weekend too. They’re a quick learning group and they’ve definitely bought in and played well.”

After the weekend performance, the U15 AA Sharks have been listed as the 27th ranked in the country according to myhockeyrankings.com

The Sharks start their regular season with the home opener this Saturday, Oct. 5th at the Battleford Arena, 2:15 PM against the Lumsden Bethune Lynx.
