Hail insurance shoulders load for producers

The peace of mind of being protected.

That’s what Municipal Hail insurance offers and as the weather warms up around the province, this should be top of mind for producers. The organization has been running since 1917, and continues to offer insurance for producers with the uncertainty of the environmental changes.

Darryl Tiefenbach, field operations manager at Municipal Hail said 2018 was a little bit busier than the past four years, but overall was average.

“It was a good year overall for the company. It kept a lot of our adjusting staff busy over the summer,” he said. “Overall, it was a good year.”

When it comes to the industry, weather definitely plays a major role in the day-to-day operations. With the uncertainty surrounding the operations, coupled with the importance of keeping the product safe, Municipal Hail steps in to shoulder the load in case of a disastrous event.

Tiefenbach said it’s impossible to predict the loss.

“It’s important. It’s something that most farms do carry some sort of coverage for,” he said. “If you get hit hard, it can be very detrimental thing to happen on your farm, and potentially put you into a situation where you’re not in a position to carry on farming.”

In 2018, 656 assessment applications were received by SMHI, which was 49 less than 2017. Also, in 2018, 89 storms caused damage across the province, which was up from 2017 when 73 played a role in claims.
