The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) recently announced its Players of the Month for January, headlined by a pair of Battlefords North Stars.

Of all the superstar names in the SJHL this season, none were more prolific over the month of January than Ben Portner.

The Stars’ top-line centerman scored an incredible 13 goals and 20 points in nine games over the course of the month, highlighted by a seven-game multi-point streak he carries into February, with at least a single goal in each of his last seven.

On the season, Portner currently holds sole possession of fourth in the league scoring race with 55 points (23 goals, 32 assists) in 38 games. For more on Portner’s journey to SJHL stardom with the Battlefords this season, click here.

Matthew MacArthur – DirectWest Rookie of the Month

Acquired at the beginning of the month, just out of the holiday break, North Stars’ netminder Matthew MacArthur has hit the ground running in epic fashion since donning the Stars’ crest.

In four starts over the month of January, MacArthur posted a 3-0-1 record, along with a lights out 2.71 goals against average and .926 save percentage, with one shutout.

Perhaps MacArthur’s most eye-catching performance came in his final start of the month, making 46 saves in the North Stars’ 5-4 overtime loss to Flin Flon, which included a number of highlight-reel stops to keep the Battlefords within striking distance throughout the night.

Also named to the SJHL Players of the Month were SuperU Defenceman of the Month, Colby Ball (Melville Millionaires); SaskTel Goalie of the Month, James Venne (Melfort Mustangs); and Canterra Seeds Saskatchewan Player of the Month, Keagon Little (Estevan Bruins).
