First Nations leaders to respond to recommendations from JSCN inquest

Feb 1, 2024 | 9:01 AM

After an emotional coroner’s inquest concluded on Wednesday, First Nations leaders in Saskatchewan will respond to the nearly 30 recommendations made.

A six-person jury and the presiding coroner presented 29 recommendations after the inquest into the stabbings on James Smith Cree Nation and Weldon. The majority of those recommendations were made to improve communication between the RCMP, Correctional Service Canada and leadership at James Smith.

However, the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) said the recommendations don’t go far enough and is calling for a national inquiry.

Leadership from James Smith Cree Nation, the FSIN, the Prince Albert Grand Council, and the Assembly of First Nations have scheduled a news conference for Thursday afternoon to address the inquest and call for more support from the federal government.

In a media advisory, the FSIN said the tragedy should be treated as a national issue requiring a national inquiry.

“A local coroner’s inquest is not sufficient to investigate the causes and consequences of this horrific event that has impacted the lives of many Indigenous people,” the advisory reads.

The press conference is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
