League-wide Recognition

North Stars’ Izyk named SJHL Defenceman of the Week

Nov 22, 2023 | 7:20 AM

Battlefords North Stars blue liner, Alex Izyk was recently named the SJHL Defenceman of the Week for his standout play of late, helping lead the North Stars to a perfect 4-0 record last week.

Izyk picked up six points (two goals, four assists) over the four games, highlighted by a monster four-assist performance against Estevan in the Battlefords’ opening win of the League Showcase, 5-1.

From there, he added goals in consecutive games in the Stars’ 6-1 win over Weyburn Thursday, and 5-4 over La Ronge, to push his personal point streak to nine straight with 13 points over his last 10 games overall.

Izyk said while it’s always nice to be recognized for the hard work put in, at the end of the day, it’s the team streak of 10 straight wins he cares about.

“Personal success comes with team success, but I’m glad I’m getting the recognition,” Izyk said. “It comes with a 10-game winning streak and how the boys are doing, so it’s been great to see and it’s a big team thing.”

Head coach and general manager of the North Stars, Brayden Klimosko said it’s good to see #26 get recognized for his hard work.

“He’s been really good the last month or so,” Klimosko said. “I think he was really good before that too, but he’s really been getting rewarded with some points and he’s just gaining confidence every day. He’s been obviously a big part of our success here the last month.”

Joining Izyk in the SJHL Players of the Week are MVP of the Week, David Coyle (Melfort Mustangs); Forward of the Week, Justin Lies (Flin Flon Bombers); Rookie of the Week, Keenan Ingram (Kindersley Klippers); Goalie of the Week, Harmon Laser-Hume (Flin Flon Bombers); and Saskatchewan Player of the Week, Logan Linklater (Kindersley Klippers).

Izyk and his North Stars teammates will return to action Wednesday night in Melfort, in search of extending their winning streak to 11 straight. The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Broadcast will be available on 1050 CJNB with the Ultra Print Pregame Show at 7 p.m. and puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m.
