'THEY'RE GOING TO BE AMAZED'

Cirque de France bringing European-style circus to North Battleford

There are few places where audiences can watch aerial performers overhead, acrobats on stage and motorcycles flying through the same tent, but North Battleford will soon be one of them.

Geoffrey Berhault, owner and performer with Cirque de France, said the circus will bring its big top to North Battleford from Aug. 27 to 30.

“It’s a show not only for kids, it’s also for everyone. And it’s a 100 percent human performance; we don’t have any animals.”

Berhault said the production is built around variety, with each act offering something different for audiences inside the tent.

This will also be the first time Berhault’s show has come to the area.

“We try to see small towns because we are a small family circus. We like to show towns a nice circus show coming from Europe.”

Berhault explained that part of the appeal is the traditional circus tent, where audiences sit close to the performers and can watch acts taking place above them.

“Everyone likes the atmosphere of that because it’s unusual,” he said. “People are already sitting close to the performer. We have a stage also in the middle so everybody can see clear what’s happening.”

The motorcycle act is often one of the biggest draws, Berhault said, bringing an element typically associated with a larger arena into a more intimate setting.

Other featured performances include aerial acts suspended from the top of the tent, known as the cupola, as well as a Cyr wheel act and a contortionist.

Berhault said he hopes families leave impressed by the range of performers and the pace of the production.

“They’re not going to see the time pass,” he said. “They’re going to be amazed.”

North Battleford is expected to be the circus’s only Saskatchewan stop this summer.
