The man facing charges stemming from a police pursuit and exchange of gunfire with officers south of Battleford Thursday is the same man from a well known social media video from 2016.

battlefordsNOW has confirmed that Randall Nicotine is the individual seen in the ‘Epic RCMP Takedown’ video that made the rounds on social media in 2016. His arrest on April 4 of that year was captured by a passing motorist’s dash cam. The video went viral, garnering more than 100,000 views at the time.

Later that year, Nicotine was convicted of four counts of assault, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, resisting arrest and two counts of breach of probation. He was handed a four-year jail sentence less time served.

The now 33-year-old from Edmonton was wanted on a Canada wide warrant for parole violations when he was arrested last week.

Nicotine has been charged with forcible confinement, child endangerment, assault of a police officer with a weapon, and driving while prohibited, among other offenses.

He made his first court appearance Monday and appeared again via closed-circuit television from Saskatoon Tuesday morning. The matter was put over until Wednesday for show cause hearing. Nicotine will appear in person.

An eyewitness supplied battlefordsNOW with video of the police chase along Highway 4 at around 8:40 p.m.

The Saskatchewan RCMP have requested the Moose Jaw Police Service conduct an independent, external investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, which included the discharge of RCMP firearms.

Additionally, the Saskatchewan RCMP has requested the Ministry of Justice appoint an independent observer.
