CUPE strike impact: how it will affect Raiders gamedays

Sep 14, 2023 | 12:00 PM

As inside city workers continue to work the picket lines, some businesses in Prince Albert are feeling the impact.

One of those businesses is the Prince Albert Raiders hockey club, which will play its final home preseason game with closed concessions on Friday as no workers are available to keep it running.

However, according to Raiders business manager Michael Scissons, the club has a plan to combat the loss of the arena’s concessions.

“The main concession won’t be open,” he said. “So what we’ve done is arranged the Timberjaks to come in and work the concession, or canteen – because it’s not going to have burgers and fries and that kind of thing, but it will have a different assortment of things that we were able to bring in.”

The Timberjaks will be volunteering to work the canteen as part of a fundraising initiative where 100 per cent of all sales during the game will go back to the club to help them out with costs during their inaugural season in Prince Albert.

Scissons added that the makeshift canteen will be set up in front of where the concessions would normally be open and provided some extra detail into what will be sold ahead of Friday’s game.

“We’re going to try to keep it as seamless as possible for our fans,” he explained. “We’re limited in what we’re able to sell there just based on equipment and resources and staffing so we’re going to bring in some pizza that we’ll sell by the slice, ice cream that we can scoop into dishes, Old Dutch chips, Coke products, chocolate bars – we’re going to keep it pretty simple.”

Popcorn will also be served at the game, popped and prepared by the Timberjaks.

As for a long-term plan, Scissons said the organization is taking the situation one game at a time.

“What we’re going to do is re-evaluate after Friday and see how things go,” he said. “We’re going to do our best to try to offer our fans some options. If [the strike] goes into another week, we’ll see what the options are at that point but we’re going to take game by game to start and we’ll see where it goes.”

The Raiders final home preseason game happens Friday night at the Art Hauser Centre against the Regina Pats at 7:00 p.m. Prince Albert’s final preseason match will be on Saturday night when they head to Warman to face the Saskatoon Blades.

The regular season for the Green and Gold gets underway from the Art Hauser Centre on Sept. 22 when they host the Moose Jaw Warriors. Puck drop is slated for 7:00 p.m.
