Temporary homeless shelter up for discussion for Meadow Lake council

Sep 11, 2023 | 12:31 PM

A temporary homeless shelter could be up and running in Meadow Lake this winter.

The city’s council is set to discuss extending the property’s operating permit with the city’s administration recommending they do so.

The shelter, located on First Street East, was approved last year, and intended to open back in February, however, it never opened its doors due to funding constraints.

According to the city’s administration, the shelter is needed as there’s no place for the homeless to sleep overnight.

The non-profit Door of Hope did operate an overnight warm-up program, however, it did not provide any sleeping accommodations. The program is also not expected to come back this upcoming winter due to funding and staff constraints.

The city has not received any messages from property owners near the shelter about any possible issues. This may change as these people have only been given a couple of days to share their thoughts. Staff originally sent a notice letter on Aug. 28, but had given it to those on First Avenue East and not First Street East.

Council’s meeting gets underway at 7 p.m.
