Meadow Lake Pride Month offering plenty to enjoy

Jun 8, 2023 | 2:25 PM

Meadow Lake Pride is excited about all the activities happening in the community this June to celebrate LGBTQ2S+ Pride Month in the area.

Volunteers have been busy getting all the events ready for the big occasion.

Jaina Wiebe, on the Meadow Lake Pride Board of Directors, said the organization is looking forward to a big turnout.

“We have a number of events that people can choose what fits them best,” she told meadowlakeNOW. “We want to make sure we had a good variety.”

The City of Meadow Lake held a flag-raising ceremony on June 1 to help mark the occasion as did the Northwest School Division

Meadow Lake Pride joined efforts with the Meadow Lake and District Humane Society to take part in the Meadow Lake Stampede’s Western Parade on June 5.

“It was incredibly rainy, but it was great,” Wiebe said with a laugh. “It was a great turnout. I think we had more people here than last year.”

New this year is a Cozy Mic Night at Meadow Lake Library is planned for 7 p.m. tonight.

“That’s sort of a chill, acoustic coffee house,” Wiebe said.

Then, on Saturday organizers will have a dress-up story time event for kids at the Meadow Lake Library.

On June 11, people can take part in the St. Cyr Hike. Next week, a trivia night is planned on June 14. Other events include a Pride Workout (June 15), a Wing Night Fundraiser (June 16), a Ribbon Skirt Class (June 18), and a Paint Night event (June 20). Meadow Lake Pride will hold its annual ‘Welcome to the Gaybourhood’ day of activities at Lions Park on June 24, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

“That’s our big event in the park,” Wiebe said. “There’ll be vendors and food trucks.”

The afternoon will also include a space for a poetry reading. The event will be followed by two drag shows at the Legion in the evening.

Wiebe said she moved to the Meadow Lake area specifically to join Meadow Lake Pride because the array of Pride Month activities was so inspiring.

She invites anyone who can to take in some of the events.

“Everything is open to everyone,” Wiebe said. “We tried to create a good variety so there is something for everybody. We encourage people to come out to see if there is something there they can either learn about or [experience].

“The whole reason we started this is because we want to better the community of Meadow Lake and offer something here that hasn’t been offered before,” she added. “Our slogan is: ‘Creating Community.’ That’s what we are really hoping to do.”
