Cochin Days brings thousands together for summer tradition

“I think there was more this year compared to last, and I think that is because of the weather working so well for us,” she said. “We tend to get quite a good turnout.”

Throughout the weekend, visitors had their choice of tournaments, parades, children’s activities, food and entertainment.

Among the highlights was a kid’s bike parade with more than 140 entries, while organizers handed out over 700 hot dogs for lunch. A boat parade and fireworks over Jackfish Lake capped off Saturday before more activities continued Sunday.

The weekend also marked the return of the pancake and sausage breakfast, which served more than 400 people. It had been absent last year after organizers were unable to find a coordinator.

“It was a great event and it was very well received again,” Hornsby said. “It was missed.”

While Cochin Days lasts only a few days, putting it together is a year-round job. The celebration has been held since the 1980s, according to Hornsby, and some preparations for 2027 were already underway before this year’s event had finished.

“We’ve already booked some services for next year,” she said. “So organizing starts as we’re taking down everything. There is planning that happens and communication that happens right through the year to make it what it has become,” she said.

At the heart of that work, Hornsby said, are the volunteers, coordinators, sponsors and others who contribute services, prizes and financial support.

That support also allows the committee to contribute to projects long after Cochin Days is over. Since the current executive took over in 2022, the committee has contributed funds toward playground equipment at Hunts Cove Beach, signage for the Resort Village of Cochin and the community’s breakwater project.

After roughly four decades, Hornsby believes the reason Cochin Days continues to draw people back goes beyond the activities themselves.

“It’s definitely a community builder,” she said. “It’s an exciting, fun, inexpensive weekend for the entire family. And it’s about bringing people in, sharing, enjoying one another and having a lot of fun together.”

Hornsby also credited fellow executive members Elaine Krieger and Joanne Rivers-Wing, saying their work is an important part of keeping the weekend going.

Organizers are already looking ahead to next year and hoping to bring some new volunteers into the fold, including someone to co-ordinate the beer gardens.

The next Cochin Days is scheduled for Aug. 6 to 8, 2027.
