City waterline flushing underway

May 10, 2023 | 8:39 AM

The City of North Battleford is advising residents the 2023 unidirectional waterline flushing process that takes place every year is currently underway.

Waterline flushing started on Monday.

The operations department said the work ensures the city’s water distribution lines “operate efficiently, and that city water quality remains optimal,” according to the media release.

To complete the work, crews move water through city pipes and lines at a high speed, to create a scouring action. The water is then discharged or flushed, removing any build-up of materials in the line.

“The materials that are flushed during this process are harmless, and the process requires no additional treatment for safety,” the city states.

Areas scheduled for the 2023 flushing process include the western part of the city, between Territorial Drive and Pēyak Trail; through 105 Street; excluding the area east of 100 Street; north of 20 Avenue, and Riverview.

Residents are asked to watch for signs that read: “Water Main Flushing,” on their block, indicating they will be affected by the unidirectional flushing that night.

Those in the affected block can continue to use water regularly until 7 p.m. that night. In some cases, water main flushing of a block may take a few nights. In these cases, residents may use the water as usual from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The city reminds people to follow these tips to protect their home from discoloured water and sediment produced from the flushing process:

-Do not use any taps after 7 p.m.
-Fill your bathtub or pails before 7 p.m. for water to manually flush toilets.
-Set aside water for washing hands, washing dishes and consumption.
-Turn off your water or shut off/ isolate water appliances such as water softeners, ice makers, water-cooled utilities, or any other devices that may use water.
-Run the water from an outside tap for 10 minutes or until the water runs clear, if necessary.
-Restart your water appliances such as water softeners, ice makers, water-cooled utilities and any other devices that were turned off on nights that flushing occurred.
-Water tap use or toilet flushing while the unidirectional flushing is active can result in stained laundry, plugged filters, and damage to water heaters.

The city states it’s not responsible for any damages caused during this process.

If you use medical equipment requiring continuous water supply, please call City Hall immediately at 306-445-1700. If you are a commercial customer that operates during the flushing hours, contact city hall for more information.

The process of unidirectional line flushing should be completed on or before May 19.
