Those looking for something to do with the family on the week of Family Day won’t have far to go.

The City of North Battleford’s Parks and Recreation Department is organizing a host of activities that run from Monday, Feb. 20 (Family Day) to Saturday, Feb. 25 to keep everyone busy as part of the annual Wintertainment event.

Leah Garven, on the event organizing committee, said it will be a fun week for the whole family.

“It’s always exciting,” she said. “We look forward to preparing for it every year.”

The event is also a good way to bring the community together in the middle of winter, especially for those who don’t go away. Garven hopes the temperatures stay on the milder side for the week.

“The way our winter is going, we might have some beautiful weather ahead, compared to some other years,” she said. “People like the chance to get out and explore the community while the kids are out of school that week.”

Here is the list of events people can take part in:

Monday, Feb. 20: Snowball Cup Challenge, geared to ages 7 to 12, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., NationsWEST Field House; and Family Day “Community Fire,” including hot dogs, hot chocolate, and toasted marshmallows, all ages, 12 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Rotary Plaza.

Feb. 21 to 24: Free skating and shinny, public skating: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., family shinny: 1:15 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Don Ross Arena.

Wednesday, Feb. 22: Pony bead keychain making, ages 7 plus, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Don Ross Centre Craft Room; “Winter Dreaming,” outdoor art activity, people are asked to dress warmly, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Chapel Gallery; Kids Amazing Race, ages 6 to 11, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Don Ross Hill; and Cranky Theatre Performance with The Dreamers and Ravel She Hollers, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with the show starting at 7:15 p.m., Chapel Gallery.

As part of the Winter Dreaming event, Garven said, a group of local artists that have been working together as a collective will create some art work on the Chapel Gallery’s patio. They will create an “outdoor playscape of snow,” a place to make and display the art creations.

Friday, Feb. 24: Woodland Friends Rock and Wood Painting Day, 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., Don Ross Centre Craft Room; and Meet the Sled Dog Team, all ages, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., with the location still to be determined.

Then, Saturday, Feb. 25: Family Fun Day, all youth, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., and inflatable obstacle course in the lane pool, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Battlefords Co-op Aquatic Centre.

“That’s going to wrap up our Wintertainment week,” Garven said. “It will be an afternoon of special events and activities at the pool.”

There should be lots to do during the week for everyone to get involved in.

“This year we have added some evening activities too for families, just to try to fit everyone’s schedule a little bit,” Garven said.
