Town council passes bylaw for 2023 tax increase

The Town of Battleford council approved the new tax levy bylaw for the year at this week’s meeting.

The town’s 2023 budget, which calls for a two per cent overall municipal tax increase, was previously approved in December 2022.

As part of the process, during this week’s meeting, council approved the 2023 land-base tax of $380, a $55 increase from the 2022 rate of $325.

Council also formally passed the base tax and mill rate levy bylaw for 2023.

There will be no impact on the uniform municipal mill rate, which remains at 3.75 mills for all taxable property in the town.

“According to the bylaw…, the mill rate will remain the same as 2022,” CAO Ash Alam said. “Just the base tax will increase from $325 to $380 – only on the land, nothing on the improvements. So, anything that improvements had in 2022, the rates will remain the same.”

Alam said in his report the tax increase will bring in an extra $100,000 of tax revenue to help offset some of the increased costs to the town for 2023.

Council unanimously passed the bylaw.

Coun. David George said council already thoroughly discussed the tax increase recommended and believes that this was the way the town needed to go for 2023.

Coun. Alexis Christensen said the small increase makes sense. She thanked the whole team for their efforts, adding that in the few years, she has been on town council that “everything has been done well financially.”
