People will be able to support a good cause and get an early start on their Christmas shopping at the same time with this event.

Discovery Co-op Ltd. has announced it will hold its “Holiday Magic” shopping night on Nov. 17, with proceeds benefitting the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Battlefords branch.

The Co-op Mall in North Battleford will close at 5 p.m. Thursday to prepare for the ticketed event that runs from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Guests must be 19 years of age and older to attend. Only ticket holders will be allowed entry to the event.

Discovery Co-op marketing manager Beth Walls is pleased to see the response from the public, with all 300 tickets for the event already sold out.

“We are looking forward to seeing everyone here,” she said. “We’re super excited. We’re thrilled to be able to welcome so many people back into the mall. We took a bit of a break. We did this once in 2019, and it was so much fun. So we are thrilled to be doing it again and having the support of the community.”

The evening will include a variety of food samplings, as well as an opportunity to sample some wines and an assortment of spirits at the Liquor Gardens, which will be located in the café. People will also be able to enjoy some musical entertainment from Indigenous artist Fabian Villeneuve, who was previously featured on CBC.

The event will also include cooking demonstrations, a photo booth, and holiday sign-making. As well, many businesses will be participating in the event, so attendees will have an opportunity to enjoy a night out shopping at the same. The event also includes a chance to win a grocery shopping spree.

As another highlight of the night, the “Tree of Hope” lighting is planned. Funds raised from the Tree of Hope light purchases will be donated to CMHA Battlefords branch.

Walls said the “Tree of Hope” is a new program Discovery Co-op will run every year with the CMHA local branch. The lights on the tree will be turned on for the first time during the event Thursday.

“People purchase a $2 paper lightbulb [each], and as we sell more of those lightbulbs the tree grows,” she said. “The paper lightbulb symbolizes that you are supporting Canadian Mental Health. Right now, we are at 16 feet for this year, which is pretty exciting. We’re excited to be giving back to CMHA, and are looking forward to this event.”

All the money raised from the “Tree of Hope” program as well as all proceeds from the tickets sales for Holiday Magic will benefit CMHA Battlefords Branch.

“Over the last couple of years, mental health has been a real concern for a lot of people,” Walls said. “A lot of people have been affected by it, especially throughout the pandemic. So we thought it was a really good opportunity for us to work with the local Canadian Mental Health Association, and make sure that they have the funding to continue to offer those supports for our community.”
