Accused in Damian Moosomin homicide case now set for trial

Nov 9, 2022 | 11:18 AM

One of the accused individuals in the Damian Moosomin homicide investigation will now be heading to trial.

A preliminary hearing for Stormy Wapass-Semaganis, 24, of Edmonton, Alta., wrapped up on Monday at North Battleford provincial court.

She was facing a charge of first-degree murder in the case.

Following the preliminary inquiry, the Crown confirmed that the Crown prosecutor and Defence lawyer agreed in a consent committal that Wapass-Semaganis would instead stand trial on the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Her trial date at the Court of King’s Bench in Battleford is still to be set.

Jannay Blackbird, 33, of Saulteaux First Nation, is facing a charge of first-degree murder, and is scheduled for a private pre-trial conference at the Court of King’s Bench in Battleford, Nov. 18. She previously elected to be tried by judge and jury with the date still to be set.

Tye Partridge, 24, of Moosomin First Nation, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on May 27 after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the case. A charge of first-degree murder was withdrawn.

Denver Roy, 37, of Sweetgrass First Nation received 10 months in custody and nine months probation on Oct. 29, 2021, after pleading guilty to the charge of offering an indignity to a dead body. An additional charge of accessory after the fact was withdrawn.

Melissa Semaganis and a male youth under the age of 18 at the time of the incident, who were both facing a charge of accessory after the fact to murder, saw a stay of proceedings in their cases on April 25, 2022.

There is a publication ban on the details of the case until after all the accused individuals have gone through the court process.

RCMP previously reported Damian Moosomin, 20, was found deceased in the backyard of a property in the 1500 block of 105th Street in North Battleford on May 16, 2020. He was originally reported missing to police on May 11 of that year.
