Structure fire in Battleford flats area being investigated

Firefighters were busy putting out a structure fire in Battleford early Sunday morning that saw significant damage.

Battleford Fire Department Fire Chief Larry Gabruch said at 6:24 a.m. crews were called to the site near 24 St. W. and 35 St. W., in the Battleford Flats area, at the base of Town Hall Hill.

There was no one inside the building at the time, and no injuries were reported.

Roughly 16 firefighters responded to the blaze.

“Upon arrival, the interior of the structure was fully involved,” Gabruch said. “The fire was advanced far enough that we deemed it unsafe to make entry for suppression.”

Firefighters worked to contain the fire so it did not spread to the surrounding treed area in the vicinity.

“We were able to surround and secure the building to ensure there was no chance the fire spread,” Gabruch said.

The fire took about an hour-and-a-half to put out. The building was completely destroyed in the blaze. Some equipment was also lost.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

The building was most recently used as a woodworking shop. The building also has a long history in the Battlefords. At one time it was a restaurant and service station owned by Fred Light, founder of the Fred Light Museum, the local museum confirmed.
