Lakeland Library Region is getting ready for a big celebration Saturday to recognize its 50th anniversary.

All the fun will take place at the North Battleford Library branch.

Lakeland Library Region public service manager and North Battleford Public Library head librarian Colin Evans is encouraging people to come out to take in the activities.

“It’s a very momentous occasion celebrating 50 years of the existence of Lakeland Library Region,” he said. “I think the most important thing for me is just the evolution of the region, and the services that we offer.”

Starting at 10:30 a.m. there will be opening remarks from dignitaries, including North Battleford Mayor David Gillan and Lakeland Library Region board chair Leslie Clark in the library’s lecture theatre.

Then at 11 a.m., Cliff Burns will present a profile of the Lakeland Library Region over the last half a century.

“He [Burns] is a local author who has resided in the area for quite some time. We thought he would be a good choice because he would be able to bring the history of the libraries within the region…, ” Evans said. “We’re quite happy to have him.”

The celebration will also include a virtual-reality demonstration for people to try an assortment of games and informational sessions.

Starting at 12 p.m. there will be a cake-cutting ceremony inside the lecture theatre, and a barbecue lunch outside the library.

Then, at 2 p.m. families can enjoy some fun for the kids with a visit from magician Danny “Kazam.”

The Lakeland Library Region has 32 branches and covers the area west to Lloydminster, north to Pierceland and Goodsoil, south to Denzil, and east to Hafford.

Evans said the library has moved beyond the stereotypical place to get books over the years. It now offers a wide range of services and activities for people to enjoy throughout the entire region.

“We’re constantly evolving and providing a greatly needed service to all community members,” he said. “I just can’t wait to see what year 75 will look like.”
