RCMP Report: Young man arrested, bites police officer

Sep 1, 2022 | 5:00 AM

Battlefords RCMP arrested a 20-year-old man on multiple charges Tuesday in an odd case of assault.

Members were called to the incident in progress on the 1900 block of 104th Street in North Battleford at 9:45 p.m., with the initial report indicating a man was fighting with a shirtless teen. The teen was located and spoken to, along with several witnesses, which presented a different story.

Sgt. Neil Tremblay said the officers used this information to initiate the arrest of, Dawson Gamble.

“What had happened was an older man had come across a physical confrontation between the accused and a teenager and separated them,” he said. “The young suspect had injuries consistent with assault, so there was a thought that he was a teen victim.”

“However, after talking to all the people involved, it was discovered that he had been assaulting this younger teen and had also exposed himself to people at the scene.”

When he was arrested, the accused became violent, biting the hand of the arresting officer, who was, fortunately, wearing safety gloves and not injured. Tremblay said they’re continuing to investigate the incident.

“There’s still more statements to take.”

Gamble appeared in court Wednesday, for such charges as:

  • Uttering Threats;
  • Assault;
  • Mischief;
  • Committing an indecent act;
  • Resisting arrest;
  • Obstruction;
  • Assaulting a police officer.

Bear mace arrests

Police attended a residence on the Saulteaux First Nation Tuesday evening regarding a report of two suspects armed with a firearm and bear mace that allegedly deployed bear mace into the home and pointed a firearm at the occupants before fleeing. A 19-year-old man was arrested later that night.

“It’s still under investigation and the 19-year-old is still in custody,” Tremblay said. “A decision on charges will be made later.”

A second suspect has also been identified while charges are pending against both subjects. The investigation is still ongoing.

A few days prior, officers made another arrest following a bear mace incident, this time at a residence on 33rd Street in Battleford Saturday morning. The victim was treated for non-life threatening injuries, while the suspect was located several hours later.

After being remanded into custody, 26-year-old Payton Armstrong appeared in court Monday for assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and breach of probation.

Anyone with information on any incident can contact the Battlefords RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers.
