Grand opening for automotive shop supporting BGC Battlefords

Jul 21, 2022 | 5:17 PM

Oil Can Charlie’s is looking to make the delay for the grand opening of the new Battleford location worth it.

The automotive shop, which officially opened in early January, will have a live location broadcast on Friday with the Rock Machine and Free Ride on hand. Draws and discounts will be available for customers from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Dignitaries attending include chamber of commerce members and Mayor Ames Leslie with the Town of Battleford. Several draws will be there, including a Co-op gas card, Co-op grocery card and a pair of tickets to the Lumineers in August. Owner Jay Bottomley said they will also have discounts on oil changes.

In opening this location this year, there have been some challenges, which are shared by many businesses in the region, said Jay Bottomley, founder and owner of Oil Can Charlie’s. They’re affected, like many, by the costs of fuel and products, he said, but he’s fortunate to have had support from the region so far.

“We typically get one price increase a year, but we’ve had four or five this year,” he said.

“With everything increasing, along with the price of gas, people aren’t driving as much, but overall I’m still up [since opening the Battleford location]. We’re doing 40-60 oil changes per day.”

A community BBQ will also take place from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., in support of BGC Battlefords. During work hours at the location, $10 from every oil change will go to the club. Bottomley said he’s always appreciated their work in the community and is excited to partner with them and support them again.

“I have some really good friends that are involved with the club on the board and I think they’re a great organization,” he said. “It’s so important to be a good influence on young kids as they’re growing up. I just think it’s an invaluable asset to the community.”

“We’re incredibly grateful to have the support of Jay and Oil Can Charlie’s and we’re looking forward to seeing the community out at the grand opening,” BGC executive director Nicole Combres said.

She added that these donations come at a critical time. Amid rising costs, fall programming is just over a month away.

“We’ve seen high numbers at summer camp and our summer parks drop-in programs, which means we’re gearing up for a busy fall,” she said.

The Oil Can Charlie’s Battleford location is near the Co-op Gas Bar.
