Logan Stolz can now add “2022 Canada Cup champion” to his football resume.

The North Battleford Comprehensive High School Vikings standout took home a gold medal with Saskatchewan’s U18 team at the 25th Football Canada Cup in Kelowna, BC., in what the 17-year-old called “an amazing experience.”

“The feeling I got when all the teams came out and we were all standing there together under the lights, it definitely was a memory I’m never going to forget,” the middle linebacker said, recalling the first moments following the clinching victory.

“I’m going to carry that with me, and it was unbelievable. It means so much to bring the gold medal back to Saskatchewan.”

Team Sask played three games total on the weekend, opening their tournament with a bang, topping Nova Scotia 40-0. The team continued their roll with another convincing win over Ontario 23-11, before moving on to the final where they defeated Alberta 13-1 in a tight defensive game to take home the championship.

“That one was pretty good,” Stolz said with a smile, recalling the gold medal game.

“Their defence held us pretty good, but as the final seconds were ticking down we all kind of had that feeling like we were really going to do it, and when we won everybody ran out on the field and it was exhilarating. Everyone had a smile on their face.”

The gold medal marks the third straight for Saskatchewan, who won the tournament in 2018 and 2019, pre-pandemic.

Stolz said as he looks back on the experience, what stands out the most are the friendships and connections built within the team.

“I loved every single one of the coaches I had there and they were all so kind and encouraging, and it made me less homesick,” Stolz said. “They really brought us all together too and made us work as a team, and by the end of the trip I’d say we’re all pretty much one big family.”
