RCMP Report: Break-in suspects found selling stolen goods

Jul 15, 2022 | 12:00 PM

Battlefords RCMP arrested two people in North Battleford who were attempting to sell stolen items.

A break and enter was reported at a residence on Foley Drive on July 6. The following day, police located the suspects while they were attempting to sell the stolen goods and arrested them. The pair were on conditions not to be in each other’s company due to previous break and enter charges.

“They weren’t supposed to be together or [commit further offences],” Sgt. Neil Tremblay said. “That’s why they were held in custody.”

Both 29-year-old Desery Johnson and 37-year-old Travis Wright were held in custody and charged with possession of stolen property and trafficking in stolen property. Johnson faces an additional count of possession, along with theft under $5,000 and failing to comply with release conditions. Wright was also charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and possession of break and enter tools.

They appeared in court on July 8.

Multiple underage arrests

Police also arrested a pair of teens in relation to a break and enter on Canola Avenue on Sunday. A 12-year-old and a 15-year-old were apprehended after being located in possession of property stolen from the business.

Sgt. Tremblay said the pair were from out of town.

“We’ve had limited dealings with them ourselves,” he said. “Given how young they are, it’s not common, but offences at this age can occur.”

They will appear in youth court later this summer.

Responding to another call from July 9, police arrested a 17-year-old female in Battleford. After getting the report of an attempted break-in at a residence, officers found the suspect hiding in a neighbouring yard.

The youth is facing breaking and entering, possession of stolen property, and possession of a knife for a dangerous purpose. Tremblay said the accused reportedly didn’t brandish the knife, but noted that the charge comes from the original break-in offence.

“If you’re in possession of a weapon while committing another criminal offence, that possession can be deemed for a dangerous purpose,” Tremblay said.

She is set for youth court on July 28.

Additional break and enter cases included:

  • A business on River Valley Drive on Sunday evening. A window was smashed to gain entry but the suspect appeared to have fled quickly and it’s unknown if anything was taken.
  • A business compound on Thatcher Avenue over the past weekend. Several pounds of copper wire reported stolen.
  • A second business compound on Thatcher Avenue over the weekend. Items taken include a battery and a catalytic converter.
  • A garage on the 400 block of 31st Street in Battleford on Sunday afternoon. A folding traveling bike and a gas can were among items stolen.

The RCMP are also looking for three recently stolen vehicles:

  • A blue 2016 Ford F150 (Sask License 250-GLJ) reported stolen from 1200 block of 102nd Street in the late afternoon on July 7.
  • A green 2018 Hyundai Kona (Sask License 567-LYB) stolen from Bunce Crescent Monday morning.
  • A green 1995 Chevrolet K/V 10/1500 (Sask License 927-IWB) reported stolen from the 1600 block of 92nd Street early Tuesday morning.

Other calls

The detachment saw 16 mental health investigations, two individuals charged with impaired driving, 28 various traffic charges, 71 disturbance calls, 22 other reported thefts, 19 mischief investigations and 19 traffic collisions, including the incident on Territorial Drive over the weekend.

Tremblay said there’s no new information at this point.

“It will be a week or two before we get the updated report from the traffic analyst,” he said.

Anyone with information on any incident is urged to call the Battlefords RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers.
