Highway construction likely to cause delays for weekend travel

Canada Day travel is going to require some planning from Saskatchewan residents

The province is reminding motorists to be proactive when scheduling their long weekend trips to lakes, rivers and parks. Several construction projects on Saskatchewan highways are expected to cause delays.

Battlefords MLA and Highways Minister Jeremy Cockrill said in a release that these projects will provide a safer and more efficient road network, but come with short-term inconveniences during construction season. Motorists will have to watch for signs indicating work zones and slow down to 60 km/h, with some that require slowing down even when workers are not present.

“When travelling, you should always leave yourself some extra time and check the Highway Hotline when planning your route,” Cockrill said.

Examples of potential hazards requiring this include a sharp pavement drop-off or loose stones.

The provincial government is planning to improve more than 1,100 km of provincial highways this year. Some of the prominent highway construction projects near provincial parks include:

  • Highway 26 to Meadow Lake Provincial Park
  • Highway 38 to Greenwater Provincial Park
  • Highway 204 access to Battlefords Provincial Park

Additionally, paving will occur on roadways within the Battlefords and Meadow Lake Provincial Parks.

You can report a highway work zone signing problem by calling 306-244-5535. Check the Highway Hotline for up-to-date information on construction, emergency road closures, the status of ferries, barges and other road activities. Information is also available by calling 511.
