RCMP Report P2: Garage, shed break-ins under investigation

May 27, 2022 | 5:00 AM

Of the 677 calls for service Battlefords RCMP responded to in their latest reporting period, there were many break and enters investigations.

Among these break-ins was an incident at a business compound on Railway Avenue in North Battleford, early in the morning on Sunday. At least two suspects were witnessed on surveillance footage.

Sgt. Neil Tremblay told battlefordsNOW that the images they’ve released of the suspects isn’t ideal, but could still help the investigation.

“Hoping the way someone stands or dresses might jog someone’s memory,” he said.

Many of the thefts and attempted thefts this week were garages or sheds, with similarities in items taken. Tremblay said a few appear to be related in terms of what was targeted, although a number of residences were unoccupied as well.

“We do have one confirmed suspect linked to a couple of them,” he said. “So we’re anticipating some charges related to a couple of the incidents in North Battleford.

“Sometimes there’s an uptick over the long weekend,” he said. “We’ll see if this was just a blip or not.”

Other break and enter cases include:

  • A garage on Jeanne Crescent in Cochin, reported at 12:40 a.m. on Monday, May 23. The suspect(s) are reported to have fled in a dark, older style SUV;
  • A garage on the 1300 block of 105th Street, broken into some time on the evening of May 17 or early morning of May 18. Some tools were reported missing;
  • A garage on the 800 block of 110th Street, broken into sometime May 17–18;
  • A break-in to a barn in the RM of Roundhill on the afternoon of May 19. Minor damage to property but nothing reported taken;
  • A break-in to a residence on the Saulteaux First Nation early Monday morning. There was reportedly damage to front door, along with food and other personal items taken;
  • A storage shed reported broken into over the weekend on the 100 block of 19th Avenue in Battleford. Two mountain bikes were reported stolen;
  • A garage on the 700 block of 110th Street, broken into over the weekend;
  • A break-in to a residence on the 1400 block of 96th Street, sometime during the day on May 21. Jewellery and other personal items were among items reported taken;
  • A break-in to a residence on the 600 block of 104th Street sometime during the weekend. A TV was reported taken;
  • A break-in to a Quonset in the RM of Roundhill in the early afternoon of May 19. Gasoline was reported stolen.

Tremblay said they haven’t seen many cases of gas-and-dash occur because of the improvements in security made by fuel stations, though they’ve kept an eye on that amidst gas price increases.

“We are more concerned about the possibility of thefts at farm or business sites because of the volume they are housing.”

Vehicle thefts.

A 27-year-old male was arrested and is facing charges of flight from police and possession of stolen property after an incident on May 19. Police made the arrest while recovering a stolen vehicle from the Medstead area shortly before 8:00 p.m. on the May 19.

“That had been reported earlier that day out of the Turtleford detachment,” Tremblay said. “Found it pretty quickly and made the arrest.”

A court date has not yet been released.

One vehicle search still outstanding is a white 2010 Dodge Journey with a Saskatchewan License of 482-LYL. It was stolen from the 1000 block of 101st Street on Monday afternoon.
