A Taste of Culture returns to Battlefords

Those with a hankering for spicy curry from East India or a sweet dessert from the Philippines will be able to find it at the Taste of Culture.

The event put on by the Battlefords Immigration Resource Centre is back on again in full force this year. The free festival will run June 4–5 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Agrivilla and the Agriplex in North Battleford.

Some of the food booths planned include Ukrainian, African, Filipino and East Indian. Hawaiian shaved ice treats and drinks will also be available.

The previous year was more challenging for the Taste of Culture event due to the pandemic restrictions for gathering, so organizers are hoping for a better turnout this time.

Executive director Annette McGovern is excited to see the event coming up.

“We’re a little more positive this year,” she said. “People are more willing to come out and join and have some fun. So we’ll build it back up again hopefully to where it was before. I think it will be much more fun this year.”

In addition to the food booths and some food trucks, the event will also include a number of market vendors with items available for purchase.

There will also be music and entertainment happening intermittently throughout the two days, including some Ukrainian dancing and singing.

“We’re trying to use more local people as well to showcase the local talents,” McGovern said.

There will also be fundraiser raffles planned, with proceeds to benefit Ukraine. The Ukrainian organization in the Battlefords is looking after this.

McGovern said the Battlefords has a great deal of diversity so it’s great to celebrate the many cultures that make up the community. She said people come here from all over the world.

“We’re trying to create some understanding and empathy for other cultures,” she said. “We feel if people understand where other people are coming from or why they do things, it just creates a conversation. That’s what we’re looking forward to.”
