Battlefords, rural RCMP disrupt gun traffickers

Police made another arrest stemming from a drugs and weapons bust earlier this month in Battlefords.

The RCMP’s General Investigation Section (GIS) have charged 32-year-old Adam Morin of Glaslyn with multiple weapons related offences over the weekend, while executing a search warrant at residence on Second Avenue in Glaslyn.

Back on March 18, the Battlefords RCMP detachment had received an unwanted persons report on 33rd Street in Battleford, leading to a search warrant, multiple arrests and the seizure of four firearms, including two semi-automatic handguns.

The details were shared by the RCMP last week.

Afterwards, the Battlefords GIS took over the investigation into the origin of the handguns. On Thursday, GIS officers, with the assistance of the Turtleford/Glaslyn RCMP, executed a search warrant the Second Avenue residence, seizing three semi-automatic handguns.

Morin is charged with:

  • Possession of a firearm knowing that the serial number on it had been altered/defaced;
  • Four counts of transferring a firearm, while knowing he was not authorized to do so;
  • Three counts of unsafe storage of a firearm;
  • Four counts of possession of a restricted firearm at a place other than where he was entitled to possess it under the Firearms Act.

Supt. Josh Graham, head of Saskatchewan RCMP’s Major Crimes, commended the teamwork by all parties in a media release.

“North Battleford Provincial GIS assists frontline RCMP officers by conducting specialized and complex investigations,” he said. “Together, they are working to keep communities safe.”

Graham pointed to this search and seizure as an example.

“Five semi-automatic handguns have been seized and a firearms trafficking network has been disrupted,” he said. “When our officers remove illegal firearms and weapons from the street, we are one step closer to preventing violence in the community.”

Morin appears in North Battleford Provincial Court on April 25.
