RCMP Report PT. 2: Assault arrests, car parts stolen

Mar 18, 2022 | 5:00 AM

Several assault investigations led to arrests in the Battlefords over the past eight days.

Police arrested a 28-year-old woman for allegedly throwing hot water onto a 30-year-old male at a residence on the 1300 block of 103rd Street back on March 9. The victim had significant burns on his chest as a result and was taken to hospital for treatment.

“Right now, we don’t know how significant the injuries are though the victim is expected to recover,” Sgt. Neil Tremblay told battlefordsNOW.

The accused, Kelsey Mooswa of North Battleford, was arrested the following day and appeared in court on March 11 for aggravated assault.

A 16-year-old was also charged with aggravated assault following an altercation on the 2500 block of 100th Street from March 11 that left an elderly man hospitalized with multiple injuries.

The youth reportedly used an edged weapon and the victim, who was in his 70s, suffered injuries to his hands and ear area. After being arrested on scene, the youth will appear in court on April 16. While the victim is expected to recover, there’s no update on his condition.

Extra charges

Among the 24 reports of assault, police discovered a man in custody fit the profile of the suspect of a carjacking. On March 10, police received a call from 104th Street where a driver reportedly picked up a man requiring a ride in Battleford and drove him to 104th. Upon arrival, the suspect produced a knife, demanded the victim exit the vehicle and then drove off.

The stolen vehicle was later recovered on Sunday and members identified the suspect as a man held in custody on other matters. Tremblay said the investigation is ongoing.

“Charges could be pending on this [case] as well.”

Car parts taken

After Meadow Lake RCMP released an advisory that multiple catalytic converters were stolen from vehicles last week, the Battlefords RCMP have seen similar cases in this region. Tremblay noted they had four such incidents reported last week and that the GIS unit is looking for connections.

“Whether we’re dealing with traveling criminals who are traveling from here to Meadow Lake or vice versa, we don’t know,” he said. “But that’s something that came up last week.”

Tremblay noted that the incentive for the crime is likely that catalytic converters are a commodity online though he didn’t know the average total they go for.

“It would be valuable,” he said. “And less traceable than a stolen vehicle.”

Among the other 457 calls were 14 Mental Health investigations, eight missing persons reports (no active investigations), nine traffic collisions, 40 various traffic charges and two individuals charged with impaired driving.

Anyone with information on any incident is urged to call the Battlefords RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers.
