RCMP Report Pt. 2: Ongoing investigations and assault arrest in Battleford area

Feb 4, 2022 | 12:13 PM

During a vehicle check on Jan. 27, Battlefords RCMP arrested two people and seized drugs and bear mace.

Members executing the check on Battleford Road early that morning ended up pursuing the male driver on foot, while the 21-year-old female passenger was arrested without incident. The man was arrested after a brief struggle on the 500 block of 105th Street and officers located a small amount of methamphetamine, cocaine and bear mace in the vehicle.

The woman, who was released from custody, is facing a charge of possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and is scheduled to appear in court on March 7. The driver, 25-year-old Rilley Bjerkness, was remanded into custody on charges of possession of cocaine for purpose of trafficking, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.

There were 18 assault investigations for the detachment amongst the 444 calls for service. Investigations are still underway into a fatal two-way collision from Sunday, an armed robbery from Monday and an incident where a car with one month old twins in it was stolen over the weekend.

In the latter investigation, the white Chevrolet Optra was stolen from the alley between the 1400 blocks of 103rd Street and 104th Street and was recovered a short time later in the alley between the 800 blocks of 109th Street and 110th Street with one of the children inside. Following extensive patrols, the second child was found still in their car seat on the 1300 block of 110th Street in an alley. Both infants were unharmed.

During an interview with battlefordsNOW, Sgt. Neil Tremblay said there have been no arrests and urged anyone in these areas who have camera systems to check them for video of the car between noon and 1:00 p.m. on Jan. 29.

“We just want to remind people that we’re still looking for anyone that might have footage, door cams, that kind of thing,” he said.

Given the weather conditions, which were above seasonal averages, but still below 0 C, Tremblay said it’s fortunate there wasn’t a worse outcome. The second infant was found within about 30 minutes.

“This was just an infant that was discarded that way,” Tremblay said. “That’s very dangerous.”

Other cases

Police still have one active missing persons case, as they have been unable to locate 15-year-old Darcy Roy. Tremblay said that efforts to locate are less urgent than in similar cases, despite his age.

“He’s got family here, so we don’t believe he’s in any imminent danger, we just want to locate him and confirm that,” he said.

The detachment also saw eight break and enters, nine vehicle thefts, 18 mental health investigations, 11 traffic collisions, 59 various traffic charges and two individuals charged with impaired driving.

Anyone with information on any incident can call the Battlefords RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers.
