RCMP Report: Multiple investigations underway for local thefts

Battlefords RCMP dealt with multiple investigations into thefts in the region, including a business break-in at Mosquito First Nation and an arrest in North Battleford.

On Jan. 26, multiple suspects forced entry through the front door of the business that morning in Mosquito and made off with cash and merchandise. Sgt. Neil Tremblay said the surveillance footage indicates that it’s two suspects and they hope the images made available to the public will help in their location.

“It’s some fairly grainy footage, but we’re hoping the clothing might get to someone’s memory in terms of who it might be,” he said.

The arrest in North Battleford occurred on Jan. 27, where there was a break and enter to a business on Werb Street in the morning. Police found a man sleeping in the middle of the street nearby holding stolen property from the business he had just broken into.

As a result, 34-year-old Tyler Mooswa faces charges of breaking and entering and theft under $5,000. He appeared in court the next day.

Another break and enter took place at a business compound in Cochin sometime in the early morning hours of Jan. 28. A Dodge pickup truck was stolen, but no information is available at this time on the year and plate number. That same compound was also reported to have been broken into the following night with several trailers reportedly rummaged through.

More stolen vehicles

Police are still investigating three of the nine vehicle thefts from the past week. This includes a brown 2000 Chevrolet Malibu (Sask License 646-MCP) reported stolen from the 1800 block of 102^nd Street on Feb. 1, a black 2014 Kia Forte (Sask License 516-LNZ) taken from the 1000 block of 104^th Street on Jan. 29 and a gold 2005 Honda CR-V (Sask License 432-LXL) reported stolen from 27^th Street in Battleford om Jan. 31.

Tremblay said the vast majority of these thefts continue to be cases of drivers leaving the vehicle running unattended with the keys inside.

“Now that we’re into another cold stretch, that’s our concern, is that we’re going to get another stretch of thefts at the end,” he said. “I get it, it’s cold, but you’re taking an awful chance.”

Other calls for service included 18 mental health investigations, 11 traffic collisions and 59 various traffic charges. In one case, 37-year-old Rick Diebel was arrested in North Battleford following a police pursuit. Officers had attempted to complete a traffic stop on his vehicle on 14^th Avenue early Sunday morning. The accused was located again near 111^th Street where he again fled from police, this time on foot, and was quickly apprehended.

Diebel faces charges of flight from police, resisting arrest and failing to comply with a probation order. He was remanded into custody and made his first appearance in court on Jan. 31.
