RCMP Report: Missing persons located, assaulters arrested

Nov 25, 2021 | 12:48 PM

Battlefords RCMP dealt with multiple assaults in the area over the past week.

Among the 15 investigations, police arrested five individuals for separate incidents. In one instance, a 36 year-old male was taken into custody after assaulting a woman in her thirties on Monday. Police arrived at the scene on 99th Street and arrested the suspect, Dayton Profeit, without incident.

He faces one count of assault and three counts of breach of probation. Sgt. Neil Tremblay said he was held in custody due to his significant criminal record and the victim sustained facial injuries, but will be fine.

“She didn’t attend hospital or require additional treatments,” Tremblay said.

In two separate cases, police officers were assaulted by female suspects. Twenty-three year-old Shaylene Cross-Tootoosis was charged with two counts of assaulting a police officer, disturbing the peace and breach of probation after police called to a reported of an intoxicated person and the accused reportedly struck two officers while being booked. In the other instance, 41 year-old Tara Giggie reportedly struck one of the arresting officers after having fled from a vehicle she was allegedly attempting to steal. Other charges include resisting arrest, uttering threats and theft.

Lastly, a 16 year old youth is facing two counts of assault with a weapon and one count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, after spraying bear mace at the occupants of a residence on the 1400 block of 98th Street on Monday. Two were struck, including a two year-old child with mace. The occupants were treated and are expected to be fine.

Tremblay said this is an aggravating circumstance in sentencing, with a youth that had no previous involvement with police.

“The indication is that the child was not an intended target,” he said. “But regardless, you’re dispatching bear mace in a home at people, you’re going to be responsible for anybody who you strike with it.”

Searches complete, break-in investigation continues

Among the detachment’s 437 calls for service, there were six missing persons reports. Both 25 year-old woman Autumn Dillon and 14 year-old teenager Josaiha Checkosis were located safely this past week, leaving the detachment with no active cases. This comes after Dillon was reported missing last Tuesday and Checkosis had evaded efforts to locate him for weeks.

Police also dealt with four break and enter cases, with members looking into a pair of break-ins at garages on 106th Street and 104th Street that both occurred in the early morning hours of November 21.

Tremblay said the detachment plans to release an update on Monday, regarding the investigation into the string of robberies occurring at North Battleford businesses over the summer.

Other calls included five vehicle thefts, 14 Mental Health Act investigations, 11 traffic collisions, 29 various traffic charges and five individuals charged with impaired driving.

More support welcomed

When asked regarding the potential impact of the new Saskatchewan Trafficking Response Team (STRT) on the Battlefords region, Tremblay said there’s no direct changes, given units already stationed in the region. However, he added having more resources come to neighbouring regions, like Meadow Lake getting a Crime Reduction Team, could free up members to attend to their own communities more closely.

“If there’s more teams around the province, it may allow the ones that are local to not have such an expansive area,” Tremblay said.

The STRT units are going to Saskatoon, Regina and Prince Albert. The Battlefords CRT unit services areas like Cut Knife and Unity and would occasionally get called to Meadow Lake.

Anyone with information on previously mentioned incident or suspicious activity can call the Battlefords RCMP detachment, 310-RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
