Anyone needing to gas up in the Battlefords can also receive a few perks through Co-op Fuel Good Day.

The annual initiative where Co-op gas bars across Canada support local organizations has raised nearly $1.9 million since 2017. This year, the Battlefords Discovery Co-op location is donating 6¢ per litre of purchased fuel to the Battlefords Indian and Metis Friendship Centre.

The centre will also receive $1 from every coffee slush and car wash paid for today.

Dave Rodgers, Gas Bar and C/Store Division manager at Discovery Co-op, said it’s always a good opportunity to share with the public what they do as a Co-op. In previous years, they’ve supported organizations like the Canadian Mental Health Association, the BUH Foundation and Big Brothers, Big Sisters.

“We like to support local charities and give them some exposure,” Rogers said.

The Centre provides a number of programs in the Battlefords, including housing and after care for 50 at risk individuals, an eight-room long-term housing project, a new multicultural daycare opening in October, free income tax preparation and a weekly community food bank. Rogers said this made it a no brainer to support them.

“They do a lot of programming with some of the less fortunate in the community, it’s just a really good charity to back,” he said.

This year, Rogers said they are hoping to raise $6,000 through the event locally. While many organizations have been particularly affected by the pandemic, he added that it’s an important cause any time of the year.

“Charities are always in need of money and when there’s anyone that can help in any way, I’m sure every charity appreciates it,” he said. “Anything to help them is huge, it doesn’t cost you anything, cause you’re going to burn the gas anyway right?”

The Discovery Co-op Gas Bar closes shop on Fuel Good Day at 10 p.m.
