RCMP Report: Teen found, multiple assaults, ATV accident fatal

Aug 25, 2021 | 3:33 PM

Skyler Tinker has been located.

The 13 year-old teen from North Battleford who was first reported missing back in May had been evading Battlefords RCMP and Saskatoon Police since.

Sgt. Neil Tremblay said Tinker is safe and staying with family, adding it’s a relief to have located him.

“Usually these files only last anywhere from a few hours to a couple days, so anytime they start to drag out is a concern,” Tremblay said.

This was one of 15 missing persons cases from the past week, all no longer active, as part of 580 total calls.

Assault leads to pursuit and arrest

Of those calls for service, there were 24 assault investigations, including one that involved a police pursuit in Battleford.

On Tuesday morning, a man was reportedly approached by a suspect who assaulted him and drove away in the victim’s truck. The vehicle was located in town later that day and the suspect fled evading police attempts at intercepting the vehicle. Eventually the truck was found stuck near Finlayson Island and the suspect fled on foot, which resulted in minor injuries after the Police Dog Unit assisted in his apprehension.

“Dogs are used quite regularly for tracking and planning searches, but being actively used in an arrest is less common,” Tremblay said.

After being treated in hospital and remanded into custody, 23-year-old Brenin Cuthand has been charged with multiple offences. Tremblay said the victim was able to identify him immediately.

“There’s no indication that he was targeted for that reason, he just happened to know the suspect.”

Cuthand’s charges include flight form a peace officer, dangerous driving, robbery, resisting arrest, breach of recognizance, breach of probation, mischief and disturbing the peace. He made his first court appearance in North Battleford on Wednesday morning.

Battlefords RCMP also charged a 28-year-old male this past week with assault and mischief. This followed multiple calls describing a fight in a yard on the 300 block of 27th Street in Battleford.

The accused was still actively assaulting the victim when police arrived and was arrested without incident. He’s since been released from custody with a future court date in September on conditions of no contact with the victim, who did not sustain any significant injuries.

Police have also issued an arrest for 22-year-old Brent Mosquito, stemming from an incident on Aug. 18 on Moosomin First Nation. During a vehicle stop, the driver sped away from the scene, swerving towards an RCMP member, who was forced to quickly move and sustained a minor hand injury. The vehicle was reportedly stolen.

Mosquito faces charges of assaulting a police officer, flight from police, driving while prohibited, possession of stolen property and failing to comply with a release order. Tremblay said there were other investigations going on at the time.

“One of them may have had to do with the recent firearms incident in Moosomin,” Tremblay said. “This vehicle matched a description, though we don’t have confirmation.”

There were also eight break and enter investigations, one of which resulted in a double arrest. Two women in their 20’s are charged with breaking and entering following the break-in of a home on the 1300 block of 105th Street in North Battleford on Aug. 19.

Fatal rollover

A man in his 50’s passed away following an ATV accident in a rural area south of Battleford.

On Aug. 20, officers were called to the scene that evening where the driver was pronounced dead. Tremblay said alcohol is not considered a factor in his death.

“Police, ambulance and fire all responded, but unfortunately he succumbed to his injuries.”

The family has been notified.

Other files

There were eight vehicle thefts reported over the past week.

Police are still looking for a brown 2006 Ford Freestar which has a Saskatchewan license plate of 691-LUF. It was stolen from Panton Avenue in North Battleford at some point between Aug.13–20.

Other files for the detachment included 13 Mental Health Act investigations, two charges relating to impaired driving, 34 charges for various driving offences and seven traffic collisions.

Anyone with information on any incident can call Battlefords RCMP, 310-RCMP or Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers.
