First big event since restrictions lifted

Fred Light Museum readies to hold annual Family Fun Day again

The Fred Light Museum is getting ready to hold its annual Family Fun Day coming up next month.

The event will take place Aug. 6 at the museum grounds in Battleford.

The event had to be cancelled last year due to the pandemic, so this will be the first larger scale activity for the museum since the province’s COVID-19 restrictions lifted.

“We’ve had a couple of children’s day camps but this will be our first big event,” Manager Bernadette Leslie said. “We’re excited to be open again and have people come and visit our museum. We held [the event] in 2019, and it was a big success. So we are hoping that happens this year.”

Leslie said activities during the day will include a variety of games for the family, as well as blacksmith, rope-making and lathe turning demonstrations.

“There are a lot of events to enjoy,” she said. “This time our hours are from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.”

The time was extended a little this year, so people who are working also have an opportunity to take in some of the activities.

Visitors will also be able to grab a bite to eat from the food concessions on site.

New this year, Indigenous traditional dance performances are among the activities planned.

Leslie said the museum hoped to offer Indigenous dancing previously, but the performers were not available for the date planned. So she is glad this year everyone was able to come this time. A group of Highland dancers will be back this year to give a performance as well.

“We’re happy to have them, and they are excited to be returning, showing their skills,” Leslie said.

People attending the fun day event will be able to tour the museum during their visit. A silent auction is also planned, so people are welcome to make a donation if they wish.

Leslie is looking forward to Family Fun Day, and is hoping for a good turnout.

“Come out and have a good time,” Leslie said. “There are a lot of events to enjoy.”
