U14 Bandits see success at first tournament in two years

The Battlefords U14 Bandits played their first softball tournament in nearly two years this weekend as the team returned to action in Moose Jaw.

Playing five games total, the Bandits won three of their opening four games in the round robin to advance to the semifinals.

Following a tough 9-8 loss to Swift Current to open the tournament Saturday, the team rebounded quickly for back-to-back victories later in the day, including a 7-4 win over the home team from Moose Jaw and a two-run victory over Lumsden.

Sunday morning the Bandits then picked up where they left off, with a thrilling 8-7 win over Gravelbourg that culminated in a game-winning base hit by Riley Leschyshyn that drove in Ariyana Metlewsky on a sliding play home to clinch the contest.

In the semifinals, the Bandits fell 11-4 to Weyburn, though by the end of the weekend there was nothing but smiles on the car ride home.

Head coach of the U14s, Chris Metlewsky, said it was great to see the way the team came together as a group to beat the heat and find success while building a real sense of comradery.

“It was about 36 degrees I think with the sun beating down on us by that final day, but the girls really came together as a team this weekend,” he said. “They played together, chatted, and even during their break time, all got together in their huddle and visited, so that was really great to see.”

The Bandits will now look to carry their momentum into next weekend at provincials in Saskatoon. The U14s will play two round robin games Friday at 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. and one Saturday at 4 p.m. with a chance to advance to the championship rounds from there.

All games will be played at Saskatoon’s Gordie Howe Bowl.
