SJHL releases schedule; Stars to open season with home-and-home versus Klippers

Jul 12, 2021 | 5:01 PM

Following what will be an extended 10-month layoff since their last hockey game, the Battlefords North Stars will return to action with a bang this fall, with their traditional home-and-home series versus the rival Kindersley Klippers.

The Stars will open their season at home against the Klippers, Sept. 24, before the scene shifts to Kindersley Sept. 25 for the teams’ second game in as many nights. This will mark the tenth-straight year of the home-and-home classic between the two sides to open the schedule, dating back to the 2012-13 season.

The news came as part of a larger announcement on behalf of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) Monday, July 12 as the league released their full schedule for the upcoming 2021-22 season.

North Stars head coach and general manager, Brayden Klimosko said it’s an exciting time for fans, players and the team alike, with the schedule release Monday.

“I think between the schedule release today and restrictions being lifted, things seem to be trending right where we want to be come September,” Klimosko said. “We’re right where we want to be right now, and we’re excited and ready to get the season going.”

The SJHL’s three divisions will remain intact from years prior, with the North Stars joined by the Klippers, Humboldt Broncos and Notre Dame Hounds in the Global Ag. Risk Solutions Division.

Each team will play their natural rival (Kindersley is the Battlefords’) 10 times throughout the season, and every other team within their division eight times. Teams will then faceoff against the remaining eight teams from across the league four times apiece, rounding out the 58-game regular season.

The Stars will play their first of eight games against Notre Dame Sept. 28 at home; and their first of eight against Humboldt Oct. 1, once again at the Access Communications Centre in North Battleford.

Other key dates outside of the division for the Stars include their two games at the Legends Centre in Warman for the league showcase Oct. 4-6, where they will play the Melville Millionaires and Yorkton Terriers.

The Stars will play their final game ahead of the Christmas break Dec. 18, returning to the ice in the New Year, Jan. 4. Jan. 15-16 the Stars will welcome the interdivisional rival, Flin Flon Bombers to North Battleford for a clash of the two winningest teams of the last two (full) seasons.

The longest road swing of the season will span four games from Nov. 11-27, with stops in Nipawin, Wilcox (Notre Dame), Estevan, and Weyburn. The longest home stand will span three games from Feb. 2-8 versus Melfort, La Ronge and Yorkton.

The Stars will conclude their regular season with a home-and-home March 4-5 against the Klippers. The top eight teams at the end of the regular season will make the playoffs, regardless of division.

All 58 games of the 2021-22 SJHL season will be broadcast once again on NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7 p.m., with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
