The new Maverick federal party has announced it has a candidate for the Battlefords-Lloydminster riding for the next federal election, whenever it is announced.

Ken Rutherford, of the Lloydminster area, has put his name forward.

Rick Kostiuk, one of the directors on the party’s local electoral district association board, said he is glad to see Rutherford step up as a candidate.

“Ken would be definitely the person I would think that could bring a lot of folks together in our area for sure,” Kostiuk said.

Rutherford currently owns his own real estate appraisal firm, and instructs business courses at Lakeland College, according to his biography.

He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce and an MBA, completing both programs at the University of Alberta. He also holds the AACI, P. App. professional designation from the Appraisal Institute of Canada.

Rutherford is also an active volunteer in the area. He has been involved with a number of organizations including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity and Startup Lloydminster. He is also involved with youth sports, coaching many hockey teams over the past 15 years.

Kostiuk said while the date for the next federal election has not been announced yet, it may be earlier than expected. The federal election is not scheduled until October 2023. But there has been some speculation based on reports it might be held this fall.

“We have heard there is a need, because I think there might be an election this August or September,” Kostiuk said.

He said he is pleased to now have a candidate in the riding for the Maverick Party.
