RCMP report: male wielding knife arrested

Jun 30, 2021 | 1:30 PM

The summer continues to correlate with an increase in calls for police services.

Battleford RCMP responded to 565 calls over the past week, a slight increase from the previous report. Among these files were 21 assault investigations, one of which resulted in the arrest of a man wielding a knife on June 26.

Prior to midnight that evening, officers came up to a subject who appeared to be stealing items from a vehicle parked on the 900 block of 105th Street in North Battleford. The man then pulled a knife when approached and made indications he would harm members and/or himself. He eventually attempted to flee on foot, but was taken into custody after a brief chase and the deployment of the taser.

Thirty-three year-old Tyler Mooswa of North Battleford made his first appearance in North Battleford Provincial court on Monday June 28, facing two counts of assaulting a police officer. Additional charges include possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, resisting arrest, possession of break and enter tools and failing to comply with and undertaking.

Sgt. Neil Tremblay said Mooswa was known to police, but not wanted on any charges prior to the incident. He added it was a relief every time an incident is resolved where neither the suspect nor the officers are harmed.

“Considering the introduction of a weapon into an arrest, it’s always good when they can be taken into custody where no one is hurt at all,” Tremblay said.

Suspect arrested, search underway for others

Another case highlighted in the report involved one arrest and the issuing of two warrants. Police were called to a residence on the Red Pheasant Cree Nation in the early morning of June 27, where three suspects were reported to have entered the home and assaulted one of the occupants with the stock of a rifle. The victim was treated for minor injuries.

Tremblay said the individuals involved were known to each other.

“Any time people get their home broken into it’s a lot more serious [than other calls], but unfortunately is it does occur on occasion in our detachment area,” he added.

As a result of the investigation, 29 year-old Vernon Wahobin was later arrested and charged with assault with a weapon, break and enter and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He remains in custody and is scheduled for a court appearance on June 30 at 9:30 a.m.

Both of the other two suspects, including 19 year-old Dre Meechance, are currently wanted for break and enter. The other, a 17 year old youth, is also wanted for assault with a weapon. Due to the suspect’s age, some details are not available.

Additional investigations

Police are also investigating an incident that occurred June 28 on the 1100 block of 101 Street in North Battleford, where a female entered a business without a mask and became upset when asked by an employee to put one on. The suspect proceed to push the employee and throw a bottle at the victim (who was not injured) before fleeing. No charges have been laid, while the suspect has been described as wearing a pink tank top, with black capris and no shoes.

Another incident under investigation from very early in the morning on June 26 involved an unknown male suspect spraying mace. The man reportedly did so through the front door of a business on the 1700 block of 100th Street in North Battleford, before fleeing in a white Volkswagon. Tremblay said this remains under investigation and that they have no reason to believe it’s related to Sunday’s incident where a male victim was sprayed with bear mace.

“We’re working on securing some footage that we’re going to release as soon as we can,” Tremblay said. “But we don’t believe it has anything to do with the incident in Centennial Park.”
