A man from Biggar, Sask., has been charged with 19 criminal offences after he escaped from police custody on April 18.

Shortly before 6:00 p.m. that evening, Biggar RCMP received a call that claimed an adult male in the area had pointed a firearm at another person and then left with a female youth in his vehicle. The three individuals involved in this incident were reportedly known to each other.

Officers located the suspects vehicle on Highway 14 an hour later, with the adult male and female youth inside. The man exited the vehicle and became a hazard to motorists on the highway, which prompted police to block traffic. After resisting arrest, the man was transported to Biggar Hospital for treatment of minor self-inflicted injuries.

During a search of the vehicle, RCMP members located a firearm and ammunition.

Later that evening, the man escaped custody and fled the hospital, stealing a vehicle from a residence in Biggar and heading east of town. This prompted pursuit by Biggar RCMP, Police Dog Services and additional officers from detachments in Rosetown, Unity, Saskatoon and Warman. Air service support was also provided by Saskatoon Police Services.

Just after midnight, the suspect was located near Landis, Sask. and arrested and taken into police custody without further incident or injury.

Twenty-year-old Jordan Leschinski is charged with several firearms related charges, including theft of a firearm, possession of a firearm obtained in the commission of an offence, possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle and possession of a firearm without holding a valid possession license. He was also charged with three counts of assault with a weapon, theft of a motor vehicle and multiple breaches of his probation order, as well as other offences.

Leschinski was remanded in custody to appear in the North Battleford Provincial Court today. The investigation is ongoing.
