Battlefords RCMP brings officers, public closer at Police Week barbecue

A burger, a drone and a four-legged visitor gave people in the Battlefords a chance to see policing from a different angle Tuesday.

The Battlefords RCMP welcomed the public to its rescheduled Police Week barbecue, giving residents a chance to meet officers outside the situations that usually bring police and the public together.

“Just another way… get the public out, see us in a different light, get to interact with the public,” said Cpl. Steve Bell, who oversees crime prevention and community policing in the Battlefords.

The event was originally scheduled for Police Week in May but was postponed because of bad weather.

Visitors got a closer look at the RCMP’s remotely piloted aircraft system, with members demonstrating some of the tools used in police work.

A planned RCMP police service dog demonstration also took an unexpected turn. The handler was called away and could not attend, but a Saskatchewan conservation officer brought a service dog instead, offering a demonstration and giving children and other visitors a chance to meet the animal.

The barbecue also raised money for Citizens on Patrol, an all-volunteer group that works alongside police.

“They come out and patrol the streets for us and report stuff to us, and it’s great to have them out there.”

Bell said the group relies on donations and fundraisers such as the barbecue. The money helps maintain its vehicle and cover costs such as fuel when volunteers use their own vehicles.

The event ran from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Battlefords RCMP detachment.
