RCMP advise drivers to continue to use caution following storm

Battlefords RCMP are reminding drivers to continue to use caution on the roads and highways as the cleanup from the recent snow storm continues.

Staff Sergeant Jason Teniuk said a number of officers were out during the height of the storm assisting motorists who were stuck, and he is aware roads are still not favourable.

“I know a lot of the RCMP members spent a great deal of time helping drivers push out from curbs,” he said.

He is asking people to take their time on the roads, and make sure they have proper safety equipment in their vehicles as a precaution if they are travelling in the rural areas especially.

“Those streets that haven’t been plowed yet are going to be very treacherous to go down because they will throw you all over the place,” Teniuk said.

Over 30 centimetres of snow fell in the Battlefords and surrounding area from the weekend’s storm in total.

“Take extra time to stop, and extra time to go where you need to go,” Teniuk said. “Realize it’s going to take you longer to get places, [and] other drivers may not be as experienced as you are.”

He said the RCMP actually did not receive many calls for service during the weekend storm period as a positive sign. But people do need to remain careful in the days ahead until conditions improve.

“Even as the city starts to dig out here and get down to a more manageable road surface, that surface is going to be very, very icy,” Teniuk said. “There was some rain and very wet snow that has left us with some significant icy patches.”
