Two challengers for both mayor, council in North Battleford

PAfter two days, there are already several challengers for mayor and council seats in North Battleford.

Mayor Ryan Bater will have to run against two candidates that are familiar to many in the community.

Former Finance Director David Gillan and longtime resident Lois Laing have thrown their hats in the ring for the leadership position at City Hall. Gillan worked for the city for three years, before taking over finances at the Town of Battleford in 2018, where he recently handed in his resignation. A member of the community for 40 years, Laing has worked as an Educational Assistant, as well as time in the business community and as a local landlord.

For council, Kelli Hawtin and Kent Lindgren are the only two incumbents to run this fall, while Kevin Steinborn and Don Buglas will not run for re-election. Hawtin was first elected in a byelection in 2014, while Steinborn and Lindgren were elected in 2016. Buglas leaves council after serving his fifth term.

Two challengers to sign on as of September 23 are Matthew Parker and Warren Williams. Parker has worked as a school counsellor and a swimming coach in the city, while Williams previously served as president of both the Battlefords Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club.

The nomination period began September 22 and ends October 7. Candidates are listed on the election information board and city hall and on the city website by the order their nomination papers are received.
