Local performance venue excited to be open again

One of the local performance venues in the Battlefords is looking forward to re-opening for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

She-NANIGANS opens its doors again on Friday, with a show by accomplished musician Jeffery Straker.

Kelly Waters of She-NANIGANS said it is exciting to have the venue open to the public again. Tickets are already close to sold out for the upcoming event.

“It will be fun to get the stage open and put some live music up there,” she said. “Of course, we want to make sure we are doing it in a way that is as safe as it can be.”

The venue will have a reduced capacity to meet all the province’s COVID-19 requirements for re-opening. Tables have been separated for adequate social distancing.

“I would encourage people to make those kinds of choices for the safety of themselves and others,” Waters said.

The venue also has a couple of other events scheduled this month to follow this week’s show.

The Remainders Jazz Trio performs Aug. 20 and an aged 19-plus drag show called Celine and Friends is planned for Aug. 26, a ticketed event for Pride Week.

For tomorrow’s show, Saskatchewan singer-songwriter and pianist Straker said it will be his first live performance at a venue with an audience since the pandemic started, so he is looking forwarding to the experience.

Straker was just finishing his tour in B.C. in March when the pandemic hit Canada. While being off the road, Straker said he had some online concerts that were well received, and he has also been taking a little break. He has some private backyard shows booked lately. But his upcoming show will bring him back to the spotlight.

“This is my first real step back onto a stage in a public venue so I’m really excited,” he said.

Based in Regina, Straker has played shows in the Battlefords a number of times and enjoys the area.

The roots, folk, and pop artist said he will perform some new songs from his new album during his upcoming show.

Straker is happy to be playing in the area again.

“I will be able to see everyone’s faces, and we can chat back and forth,” he said. “I think it will be a nice intimate space.”
