Sweetgrass First Nation reports two positive COVID-19 cases

Jul 30, 2020 | 3:55 PM

Sweetgrass First Nation is reporting it has two positive cases of COVID-19.

The First Nation posted a message on its Facebook page July 27 advising people to stay home as much as possible.

A recent advisory from Indigenous Services Canada Medical Health Officer Dr. Ibrahim Khan indicated there is increased risk to communities in the region, including some rural municipalities located near Sweetgrass First Nation.

“Please do not panic. Other communities have successfully slowed the spread down quickly and we are working diligently to do the same,” the chief and council stated in its Facebook post.

The First Nation is working with Khan and his team, as well as Battle River Treaty 6 Health Centre, and Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs Inc. in the effort to ensure people’s safety.

The First Nation is asking people to keep a list of anyone they are in contact with and any location they visit as a precaution.

It is also requesting people be tested at the Sweetgrass Medical Clinic.

“We are encouraging everyone to get tested, whether you have symptoms or not,” the chief and council said in the posting. “There is also the option of being tested at your home.”

Sweetgrass First Nation is temporarily closing all public offices and community buildings, and outdoor spaces to the public as a precaution until further notice. The store will still be open but people will be required to wear a mask before entering.

People are asked to limit all contact with those who are higher risk, such as older individuals and those with underlying medical conditions.

Public Health Information Security checkpoint stops are currently operating at the First Nation.
