City approved for MEEP funding from province for two large capital projects

The City of North Battleford is getting help from the province to fund two large projects.

The province announced Monday North Battleford was among a number of communities approved for support through the Municipal Economic Enhancement Program 2020 (MEEP).

The city will receive $607,472 for the 100 Street service road upgrade at the north end of North Battleford that is planned, and $1,450,000 for the Carlton Trail intersection and roadway improvements currently underway.

“It is great. We had applied under the MEEP program very soon after it was announced,” Mayor Ryan Bater said. “We had a council meeting where we discussed potential projects. These were the two that council unanimously selected. We applied, and we just received approval. So we are ready to proceed with these projects.”

Bater said these are two “very important projects for the economic development of North Battleford.”

“In addition, we will be adding them to our summer construction schedule this year, so it will provide a much needed financial injection to the local construction industry, which is also important,” the mayor said.

In total the province is providing $7,411,786 for the first 55 shovel-ready infrastructure projects announced for various communities in Saskatchewan.

The full value of the MEEP program to benefit cities, towns, villages, RMs and Northern communities is $150 million.

“Through investments like the new MEEP, which focuses on municipal projects and initiatives which will help residents get back to work, Saskatchewan will recover from the devastating economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Saskatchewan Government Relations Minister Lori Carr said in a news release. “It is exciting to see communities taking advantage of this program by submitting a variety of projects that will improve their local infrastructure, capital assets to provide services, and ultimately strengthen their communities.”
