Local MLA says province will ‘proceed cautiously’ on phased re-open plan

May 7, 2020 | 1:00 PM

With the number of new cases of COVID-19 continuing to rise in the northern parts of the province, local MLA Herb Cox said the Saskatchewan government is doing what it can to prevent the virus from spreading.

Cox said outbreaks like the one we are seeing in La Loche were possibilities provincial officials expected.

“We knew that there could be flare-ups in various areas of the province and unfortunately yes we have seen that in the northwest corner of our province,” he said.

Cox said officials are trying to be proactive with their approach when it comes to limiting the further spread of the virus.

“We have sent up some isolation trailers to help people that aren’t normally able to isolate that they can in these trailer units. We have our conservation officers and firefighters up there manning roadblocks, with the support of local leadership of course, and doing what we can to isolate the cases up there,” he said.

With the second phase of the Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan on the horizon, Cox said the provincial government is keeping a close eye on the situation.

“We are going to proceed, but proceed cautiously. As you know, we have exempted Lloydminster and La Loche from that phase one and if there happens to be other outbreaks we will do the same thing then,” he said.

Cox said although the outbreaks in La Loche and Lloydminster are troubling, the people of Saskatchewan have adhered to the advice of medical professionals.

“People are taking this seriously. We are doing what the health officials have been asking us to do. We have flattened the curve in most areas of the province,” he said.

Cox said anyone looking to stay up-to-date with the Re-open Saskatchewan plan or wants more information can go to Saskatchewan.ca/covid19.

“Hopefully we will be able to suppress this in the very near future,” Cox said.
