Walking together: Battlefords’ MS Walk fast approaching

Feb 27, 2020 | 4:33 PM

With spring just around the corner, so too is the Saskatchewan Blue Cross’ annual MS Walk, in support of those diagnosed with the disease.

Taking place in the Battlefords May 24, the local walk will be one of hundreds throughout the nation, featured in communities around the country. The walk brings attention to multiple sclerosis (MS) which is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system affecting the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves.

Canada has one of the highest rates of MS in the world, with an estimated 77,000 Canadians living with the disease.

Northern community walk coordinator for the Battlefords, Jill Martin, said there is no age limit or prerequisite credentials needed to take part in the community’s walk, with all welcome and invited to attend, free of charge.

Senior coordinator of development with the event, Rebecca Snider, said more than anything the walk offers a show of solidarity amongst community members, adding it gives people a chance to band together to offer support in a quest for a cure.

“It is kind of an opportunity for the community to come together,” Snider said. “It is a chance to celebrate their fundraising accomplishments and just bring the whole community together to support those affected by MS.”

About 60 people from the local region attend the two-to-three kilometer walk on a yearly basis.

All proceeds raised will be donated toward research efforts, and to fund programs and services to help benefit those affected by MS throughout the province.

Check-in for participants will be at 12 p.m. with the walk itself to commence at 1 p.m. on May 24 at Lawrence Elementary School. The school is located at 1942 102nd St., North Battleford.

Those interested in taking part in the walk are invited to pre-register online here, or sign up on the day of the race.
