Jay Bouwmeester’s cardiac episode shows importance of preparedness

In Anaheim last night, St. Louis defenceman Jay Bouwmeester suffered a cardiac episode on the bench during the first period.

During a break in the first period Bouwmeester collapsed on the bench and was immediately attended to by the team’s medical staff and Anaheim’s on hand physicians. Staff members used the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) device that is required to be on hand at all NHL facilities.

Their preparedness for an incident like this one helped provide immediate medical attention to Bouwmeester before he was rushed to hospital.

Kyle Kellgren, president of Battleford’s minor hockey association (BMHA), said they have AED devices on hand at all games.

“At the rinks there are AED devices. The Civic Centre has an AED as well as Battleford’s rink,” he said.

BMHA allocated enough room for all teams to have a trainer present on the benches. They also purchased CDI Health first aid packs that are an expanded version of a standard first aid kit.

Kellgren said the packs are “very big with everything a team would need for. All teams are equipped with them and have them on the benches.”

Kellgren said they have fortunately not had to use the AED devices at the rinks.

“They are good to have even if they never get used,” he said, adding BMHA will use this event to reflect on current policies.

“As stuff like this happens, we as an organization will review and double check all our procedures going forward. We will be making sure all our rinks are properly equipped and there are procedures in place,” he said.

The St. Louis Blues reported Bouwmeester texted his fellow teammates from the hospital this morning to say he’s doing better.
